With bone broth gaining popularity, many are wondering what the difference is between it and regular broth or stock. The simple answer is, not much. Bone broth is simply simmering bones in water for several hours. You can use any type of bones but most common are chicken, beef or fish. You can also add vegetables, herbs or spices. It’s best to add a couple of tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to help draw out the nutrients from the bones. Much of the healing power of chicken soup comes from the bone broth. You can purchase bone broth in the store but why not make your own? It costs next to nothing if you use bones you already have. And it’s so easy! I use the bones and skinĀ of a whole chicken that I had already cooked and used the meat from (you can even use the bones from a store bought rotisserie chicken). Simply put the bones in a crockpot (or you can do it in a pot on the stove as well), add water to fill the pot and a couple of tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. Turn it on high until it comes to a boil. Then turn it down to low and simmer for about 24 hours. Allow to cool. Strain. Divide into individual portions and freeze. I use a large crockpot and it makes about 18 cups. Now let’s talk about why! Bone broth contains amino acids, minerals, hyaluronic acid, collagen, chondroitin, glucosamine and more. It’s literally beneficial for your entire body. It’s great for your skin and helping to maintain a youthful appearance. It’s great for your muscles, bones and joints. It helps to keep your brain healthy and boosts your mood. It’s also very beneficial to your digestive system and immune system. Along with all of these health promoting benefits, we can also save some money on supplements and anti wrinkle creams! Bone broth everyday to keep the doctor away!
