My kids and I went to the market in search of kumquats. We were on a mission to try them for the first time. Luckily we found some. But we also found a dragon fruit and a horned melon. We had never tried either of those before either. They were quite expensive but I thought it was worth it to buy just one of each so we could try them. I thought it would be a fun experience and it was! My mother, sister and her two kids stopped by and joined us. First we all tried the kumquats which were a big hit. Then we cut up the other two so that everyone could try them. They were different from anything we had ever had before. I would say that they weren’t anything we can’t live without but they were pleasant. After my mom found out what I paid for them, wanting to make it worth every penny, she proceeded to rub the skins onto her neck and chest in hopes of discovering a miracle wrinkle remedy. As all of us were enjoying the natural high of the whole experience, we wondered if we actually saw her wrinkles disappearing! Well, I don’t really know about that but what I do know is that having your kids pick out produce they’ve never tried before is an excellent idea. It’s not only a fun family experience but it makes kids more likely to want to try new foods and increases their chances of liking them. The same is true for kids helping in cooking and preparing meals. They will be more likely to eat and enjoy meals that the helped to prepare.
